Lara ponders stepping down
published: Monday | July 3, 2006

LARA

A BITTERLY disappointed Brian Lara last night said he was going to "revisit" his decision to take on the captaincy of the West Indies side.

In the wake of the series loss to India at Sabina Park yesterday, the thrice WI skipper cited selection decisions and losing for the rethink his role in the regional side.

"I definitely feel let down and must tell you there's a meeting coming up in a couple of weeks and, depending on the selectors (after that), I'll definitely revisit my decision to captain the West Indies team," Lara said at the post-match press conference.

"It's been painful the past couple of months, not just the Test matches but also the one-dayers," he said. "Really and truly I have West Indies cricket at heart but this is a situation where my reputation as a captain is being wrapped up, like this is the first time in many years that India have won a series here and I am the captain."

Lara had previously complained about his lack of influence in selection matters but last night stated: "I found out only a few days ago that I had been a selector since May 28. I don't know how that slipped but I got the endorse-ment a couple of days ago ... so be it.

"You know it's hurtful when you've been in a team and know the chemistry of the team. At the press conference after the Test in St. Lucia I said, in hindsight, (left-arm spinner) Dave Mohammed should have played and two days' later he was dropped. How do you work these things out?" the 37-year-old skipper asked.

"These things are unfortunate but, as I said, there's a meeting coming up shortly where the selectors will be coming up for selection and, based on that, I will make my decision regarding the captaincy of the West Indies."

Lara was also no fan of the Sabina Park pitch.

"This pitch, it reminds of the days when we used to go down to Australia and destroy them and then lose in Sydney," he said. "This pitch was not ready for such an important game and definitely suited India.

"However, I'm proud of the guys and the way they played throughout the series."
