THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM a Jamaican living in the United States for the past 13 years. I visited Jamaica in 2000, and went to a nightclub with my nephew and his girlfriend.
We enjoyed ourselves, and my nephew took me back to my hotel about 3:00 a.m. and headed back to his home in Edgewater. I got a call about 4:30 a.m. from my nephew only to understand that he was stopped by some police officers demanding money from him or they would take him to jail.
To be frank with you, he did not have his papers on him for the car, but the car is his and my nephew is a hard-working person; never been in trouble.
He did not have any money on him so they decided to drive behind him so that he could get home to give them the money, part of which he had to get from his landlord.
I remember they used to say police 'licky licky' but to me they have no integrity.
It hurts my heart to see what my nice, beautiful island has become. I cannot go to see many of my friends because I am so afraid to go where they are living. There is so much killing, and instead of getting protection from the police, they try to dig from citizens. What a shame.
With this new Prime Minister, I hope things will be better.
I am, etc.,
