IF YOU ever thought that conserving energy was a waste of time, think again! Several students of inner-city high schools walked away with big prizes on Saturday night for their participation in the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica's (PCJ) Energy Conservation Incentive Programme.

The programme is in its third year and targets students of inner-city schools, giving them incentives and rewards for good behaviour and for promoting energy conservation.

Part of the incentive programme was a competition was divided into three categories. The first category was an essay competition which had the students writing about the benefits of conserving energy. There was also a poster competition and an environment project in which schools developed projects which promote energy-saving practices.

At a dinner held at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston, the winners were announced and presented with their prizes.

The winner of the poster competition was Sheldon Thomas of Holy Trinity High School in Central Kingston. He walked away with an airline ticket to Disney World in Florida, courtesy of Air Jamaica.

Oneika Harris of New Day Primary and Junior High won the same trip for her essay and Edith Dalton-James High School in Duhaney Park, St. Andrew, won the environment section of the competition.

Marcia Browne, coordinator of the programme, said it was another successful year for the competition. She said she was extremely pleased with the effort demonstrated by the students and expected the programme to grow even more next year.
