TRINIDAD: Privy Council rules for Hindus
published: Thursday | July 6, 2006

Trinidad (Trinidad Express):

AFTER a costly four-year-long legal battle, the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) will finally be able to obtain a radio broadcasting licence.

The Hindu organisation had claimed that the PNM administration deliberately discriminated against it after Citadel Limited, co-owned by party supporter Louis Lee Sing, was granted a licence ahead of its pending application. This is the second time in recent weeks that the Maha Sabha has been favoured in a judgement on the grounds of discrimination.

In a constitutional motion filed by the organisation, High Court Judge Justice Peter Jamadar ruled in May that the creation and continued existence of the Trinity Cross as the nation's highest award amounts to an indirect form of discrimination against Hindus and Muslims. As a result of this ruling, Government has decided that the Trinity Cross is to be renamed.
