GUYANA: More phone cables cut by saboteurs
published: Thursday | July 6, 2006

Guyana (Stabroek News):

AMID ANOTHER cut Tuesday of vital cables by saboteurs, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) has warned of the impact that these acts can have on communication in the event of an emergency or where national security interests are threatened.

Saboteurs severed the fibre cable in the vicinity of D'Aguiar's Park, Houston. This was revealed in a press release from the phone company yesterday. GT&T noted in the release that severing of the cable led to loss of service for several hours to customers on the East Bank of Demerara from McDoom to Linden and Bartica. GT&T said in the release that it continues to notify the public of the consequences of such acts and the effect they are likely to have on the ability to communicate particularly in the event of an emergency and more importantly in instances where it threatens the interest of national security.
