LIKE OTHER children her age, six-year-old Levanna Gordon would have been looking forward to going on summer holidays, but this was never to be.

On February 31 this year young Levanna was denied this privilege when she had her life cruelly snuffed out when gunmen attacked her father's car. Levanna was shot all over her body and died on the spot.

While hot spots in Spanish Town and Portmore have been plagued by the problem, the scourge has been affecting the parish as a whole.

OTHER INCIDENTS

For instance, on March 5, Durraine Gidden, an employee of the St. Catherine Parish Council, was shot and killed outside of the Truth Gospel Faith Ministry, in Bog Walk, after delivering a message.

The mother of 26-year-old Kevin Davis and 19-year-old Gary Smith is also feeling the pain of losing her sons after their decomposing bodies was found on the Redemption Ground market in Spanish Town on April 26. The young men who were from Greater Portmore, St. Catherine, were senselessly killed after they had gone to Spanish Town to attend court. They were reportedly mistaken for men from one of the rival gangs operating in the Old Capital.

The list sadly goes on and on, as St. Catherine has recorded over 150 murders since the start of the year. On June 4, a policeman was killed at a dance in De La Vega City. Corporal Lincoln Parker was shot 26 times while he partied in a community where he was well known.
