We will win - Portia Simpson Miller
published: Friday | July 7, 2006

Ross Sheil, Staff Reporter

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts and Nevis:

PRIME MINISTER Portia Simpson Miller has responded to claims by the Opposition that she is not ready for a general election, affirming that she will win, no matter what.

It is not her People's National Party (PNP) that is not ready, rather it is the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), the Prime Minister said at a breakfast meeting with Jamaican journalists in Basseterre yesterday on the final day of discussions at the 27th Annual Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government.

TRYING TO BE DIVISIVE

She accused the JLP of complaining about the voters' list because they are not ready. Adding that they were trying to be divisive, she said: "I'm hoping I'll get the co-operation from the Opposition and I hope they are not looking for some excuses because they know they cannot win the next election."

The Prime Minister said that she would call an election at an appropriate time, but that she would not allow the JLP to set the agenda.

"They have indicated from long ago that their role is to oppose, oppose, oppose and bangarang, bangarang, bangarang. A Prime Minister cannot speak like that ... I have responsibility for all Jamaicans, including (Opposition Leader Bruce) Golding," she said.
