Knibbs, Terrier the surprise selections
published: Saturday | July 8, 2006

RADCLIFF KNIBBS and Tiffany Terrier are the two surprise selections to this year's team which will represent hosts Jamaica at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships (CAGC) at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club from July 30.

Knibbs had a torrid time during the national trials staged at the Cinnamon Hill course in St. James in April, but the switch of venue to his home course in St. Catherine saw him clinch the final berth on the prestigious men's Hoerman Cup team.

He joins Fabian Campbell, Owen Samuda, Michael Scott and Damion Spencer, who also failed to impress at trials, on the five-man squad. Xavier Rose has been named reserve.

Teenager Terrier, despite not competing at the trials, has made the three-woman George Teale Trophy side which features seasoned campaigners Maggie Lyn and Jodi Barrow.

The 2005 USGA's Senior Women's Amateur champion, Diane Lang, had been touted for a place on the team but was unable to take her place. Leiza Blakeley has been relegated to reserve.

Keith Stein and Carl Bruce will carry the flag in the men's over-35 Ramon Baez Figueroa Trophy section while John Smith and George Hugh comprise the senior team in the Francis and Steele Perkins section.

The pairings will be backed up by Mark Newnham and Fred 'Cricket' Sutherland respectively.

The super senior combination vying for the Higgs and Higgs Trophy will be Dennis Atkinson and former Jamaica Golf Association president Ossie Lee (reserve Herman McDonald).

The CAGC will run from July 30 to August 6.
