THE EDITOR, Sir:I read one of the most distressing articles in The Gleaner online Thursday morning about the sexual abuse of a teenager, allegedly by a deacon and two youngsters. I sincerely write to apologise, on behalf of the Church, to Jamaica. We owe our country a public apology.
I condemn such an action and it's disheartening to be coming from the Church to our youths. The action was two-fold: it both abused a teenager sexually and mentally, and at the same time, taught these boys that its OK to do such a thing, that was supposedly a training ground for them.
I, however, must say there is no way that could have been a deacon who cherished his walk with God. No man in contact with God through prayer and fasting would do such a thing. It is sad to know that persons who do not have a relationship with God hold such offices in our churches because ultimately, this is the end result. It is an eye opener, or should be for those in leadership in the churches and for those who appoint them.
The makers of the law and leaders of the church need to set measures in place against predators in the church that hide behind the banner of the Church to carry out their corrupt and dangerous lifestyle.
To the parents of that child, I pray for your healing and swift healing of your child. Many are in the Church but the Church is not in them. Again, I do apologise to the people of Jamaica and ask God to forgive the Church for such an unlawful and disgraceful act.
Yours in Christ
