Melbourne off to fine start

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Melbourne started the defence of their Capital and Credit All-Island limited-overs cricket title with an impressive nine-wicket victory over St. Mary at St. Mary Sports Club yesterday.

Damion Jacobs, 4-17, Sheldon Smith, 2-15, and Yanick Elliott, 2-5, combined to dismiss St. Mary for 74 in 35.1 overs.

In reply, Melbourne raced to 75-1 in 13.5 overs. Damion Henry, 38, and Elliott, 26, who were both unbeaten, led the way for Melbourne.

At Nelson Oval, Lucas defeated St. Elizabeth by 72 runs.

Scores: Lucas 225 all out off 44 overs (Chadrick Walton 67; Wayne Gayle 40; Chris Dyer 5-41, Ainsley Goss 3-29. St. Elizabeth 153 all out in 38.1 (Shane Powell 43; Tareque White 42; Gary Brooks 3-22, Delroy 3-22).

At Elletson Road, Manchester thrashed hosts Police by eight wickets.

Scores: Police 198 all out from 46 overs (Ricardo Howe 35; Donovan Sinclair 6-31, Damaine Sangster 2-19). Manchester 201-2 in 31.5 overs (Gary Graham 93, Danielle Rickets 52, Sinclair 33 not out).

At Collie Smith Drive, Portland pounded Boys' Town by 172 runs.

Scores: Portland 271-8 off 50 overs (Carl Brissett 58; Denroy Morgan 3-38, Kirk Thompson 2-64). Boys' Town 99 in 29.5 (Damion Allen 46; Darren Grey 6-18, Randy Grey 3-18).

At Allan Rae Oval, rain spoiled the clash between hosts Westmoreland and Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

Scores: JDF 200 all out off 48.2 overs (Mark Grey 40; Myron Wilson 4-25). Westmoreland 32-6 off 9.4 when rained stopped play. Kamal Dennis had already taken 4-12.

EASY WIN

At Chedwin Park, League and Challenge champions St. Catherine made light work of St. Thomas, beating them by 82 runs.

Scores: St. Catherine 192 all out off 39.4 overs (Junior Stewart 46; Steve Logan 2-20, Oneil Wright 2-24). St. Thomas 110 all out in 34.3 overs (Warren Edwards 43; Epharim 4-17, Jermaine Lawson 2-23).

At Kaiser Sports Club, Clarendon defeated St. Ann by seven wickets on the Duckworth/Lewis system.

Scores: St. Ann 157 all out off 32.3 overs (Martin Clarke 47; Errol Thomas 4-11, Keron Richards 3-36).

After rain stopped play with Clarendon on 52-1 off 10 overs, they were asked to score an additional 20 off 10 overs when play resumed. They ended on 82-3 off 15.3. Albert Gopie made 40.

At Kensington Park, the hosts defeated St. James by 122 runs.

Scores: Kensington 180 all out off 42 overs. St. James 58 all out in 19 overs.
