National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) warned to clean up Kingston's mess
published: Wednesday | July 12, 2006

CLARKE

DRIVEN BY numerous complaints received from Corporate Area residents regarding the non-collection of garbage, the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) has written to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) urging them to address the issue promptly.

KSAC Deputy Mayor Lee Clarke made the disclosure yesterday during the council's monthly meeting at its Church Street offices in downtown Kingston.

He revealed that Kingston Mayor Desmond McKenzie wrote to Errol Greene, executive director of the NSWMA, "calling on him to deal with the matter urgently" after the council was "bombarded with telephone calls."

The deputy mayor, who added that the letter was copied to the Minister of Local Government, Dean Peart, said the non-collection of the garbage has driven residents to dispose of their garbage illegally.

"Many areas of the municipality are currently being overrun by garbage and, in response, people are dumping their garbage in gullies, or on the streets where they are washed into the drains and clog up the system," said Mr. Clarke.
