Pay scale and migration
published: Wednesday | July 12, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM one of the most patriotic Jamaicans. However, Jamaica's pay scale is so much lower than many of our Caribbean counterparts. We are a part of the CSME and it should be no surprise to our Government that many of the people who are qualified and willing to contribute to the development of our nation will be migrating to other islands in the near future.

As patriotic as we all are, it simply makes no sense to remain in an environment where recent graduates from university can't find a job and if they do get one, the remuneration package is hardly enough to pay rent and perhaps purchase enough groceries for the month.

If Jamaica's pay scale remains the same, as prices continue to rise, we will be left with a depleted labour force and an economy that will be in constant decline.

I am, etc.,
