LIVING WITH HURRICANE RISK
WHILE THE impact of hurricanes can be mitigated through structural measures involving engineering works, and non-structural measures such as evacuation plans and public education, the reality is that risk cannot be eliminated.

Systems that affected Jamaica
1951. HURRICANE CHARLIE (AUGUST 13-23) - Charlie, coming ashore near Kingston as a Category 3 hurricane in the evening of August 17, 1951, will long be remembered as the deadliest hurricane ever to strike the entire south coast of Jamaica.

The most devastating natural disaster
HURRICANES ARE generally perceived as the most devastating natural disasters to affect the Caribbean - and with good reason. The 2005 Atlantic season saw 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes.
