Montego Bay murders affecting pupils
published: Thursday | July 13, 2006

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE MURDEROUS carnage in sections of Montego Bay, St. James, has been seriously affecting children, with one high school reporting that many students have lost their parents to violence.

Speaking at the launch of the 'Norwood Relief Fund,' on Tuesday, Alwin Belanfanti, the principal of Irwin High School, said his school was reeling from the impact of the violence.

The fund is an initiative of the People's National Party (PNP) North West St. James constituency, geared towards raising money to address some of the social needs of affected communities.

"During our streaming at the end of our end-of-year examinations last year, we found out that we had a class of 25 boys who were disruptive for the entire year," said Mr. Belanfanti. "Subsequent investigations have revealed that over 60 per cent of these boys, who are from these violence-torn communities, had fathers who were either dead or in prison."
