WESTERN BUREAU:
THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED final of the 2006 Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS)/St. James Intermediate Netball League between Blazers 'B' and Juveniles, which was slated for the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts on Saturday night, was not played due to the islandwide power outage, which left the western city in darkness.
With the players milling around the court and hoping for restoration of power, some spectators used the occasion to poke fun at the organisers, joking that the JPSCo. was so inefficient it was not even able to light up the court for the competition they have sponsored.
"I am not sure what has gone wrong but if we can't play today we will just have to reschedule for another day," said Charles Stephenson, a member of the competition's steering committee. "Needless to say we don't have a problem with the JPS because they are supporting the development of our netball."
The play-off for third place between Pacers 'B' and Tornados, which should have preceded the final, was also not played because while the game was slated for 5:30 p.m., the match officials did not want to start the game which would have required lights to be completed.
As a result of the forced postponement of the games, the competition's steering committee is expected to meet this afternoon to decide on new dates to play the games. Indications are that they could be rescheduled for this coming weekend.
By virtue of reaching the competition's final, both Blazers 'B' and Juveniles have qualified to play in the senior section of the JPS league next season.
