Probe Cuba's gift of light bulbs
published: Tuesday | July 18, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DENNIE QUILL raises some interesting issues on Cuba's gift of light bulbs to Jamaica. At first glance, a munificent gesture, Quill's commentary discloses a multimillion U.S. dollar cost to Jamaica. He also questions why Jamaicans could not replace the Cubans needed to distribute the bulbs.

Quill has made me curious. As a citizen concerned, not just about crime, but also about my country's economy, I ask for further investigation into this gilded gift. I am not worried about the giver being Cuban, despite recent concerns about health matters turned unhealthy in other arrangements Jamaica has with them (to do with eye surgery); we have benefited much overall from past gifts. I am worried about the cost of the gift!

I am, etc.,
