Caribbean Cardiac Society visits Jamaica
published: Wednesday | July 19, 2006

Noel Thompson, Freelance Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

APPROXIMATELY 300 heart specialists from across the English, Dutch, Spanish and French-speaking Caribbean are in the island for a week of activities, including administering free heart checks to persons in St. James.

The Caribbean Cardiac Society (CCS) comprises certified heart specialists, doctors, nurses and technical personnel from across the region.

The CCS will be hosting its 21st Annual Scientific Conference at the Half Moon and Holiday Inn Sun Spree Resort Hotels in Montego Bay under the theme 'Standards and Care Within the Caribbean'.

"We are hoping to get the latest update as it relates to cardiovascular diseases and techniques," said Dr. Edward Chung, president of the CCS.

NEW TECHNIQUES

"We will discuss how to implement the specialised techniques that are available in the United States and Europe, within the Caribbean, and how we are going to make our people benefit from that."

Dr. Chung said several prominent heart specialists worldwide will give updates and hold talks about how to undertake various heart surgeries and other cardiac related matters.

As part of the society's community outreach pro-gramme, a free health clinic for persons who are experiencing heart problems was conducted Monday at the Blessed Sacra-ment Church in Montego Bay.

"On Tuesday (yesterday) we are going to have some sessions with nurses at the Cornwall Regional Hospital relating to the heart and cardio pulmonary resuscitation," he said. For the remainder of the week the heart specialists will hold their scientific sessions at the hotels. The conference ends on Saturday.
