June fires left 100 homeless
published: Wednesday | July 19, 2006

RESIDENTIAL FIRES wreaked havoc across Kingston and St. Andrew last month, leaving more than a hundred persons homeless and more than $8.5 million worth of damage.

These figures were compiled by the Kingston and St. Andrew division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade. They were made public at a meeting of the parish disaster and public health committee yesterday.

The report showed that the division received 194 reports of fire in June. Of this number, 40 were deemed malicious false alarms. The York Park Fire Station responded to 60 of these reports, the most of all the fire stations in the region.

The estimated value of the loss caused by the fires is $8,583,300. The fires left 73 adults and 60 children homeless. There were, however, no deaths or injuries associated with fires for the month.
