THE EDITOR, Sir:
ON A recent trip home, I had one of my most memorable times ever. My family and I returned for a long overdue family reunion that was extremely gratifying.
However, I am disturbed by a couple of things that leave me wondering about the shortsightedness of our Government and their seeming inability to plan for the future, as opposed to simply implementing ad hoc measures that temporarily halt some issue or another.
In particular, the immigration section of the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay is simply atrocious. On arrival there, I found myself in a room overflowing with people waiting to be processed for entry. Glad to see so many people coming to Jamaica, but the Immigration Department is simply backwards and fit only for a backwater country. That area needs to be immediately renovated (or at the very least ensure that the air-conditioning is functioning), properly-staffed with sufficient numbers of immigration officers for ease of processing, especially in times of heavy traffic.
My other issue has to do with the highways being built around towns like Montego Bay. What I find difficult to accept is that these are the only two major access routes, with only two lanes, when there are more than ample shoulders for expansion to ease the enormous congestion I experienced daily. This congestion will only become more severe as the city of Montego Bay continues to grow.
I am, etc.,
