published: Wednesday | July 19, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

ALIA ATKINSON

JAMAICA HAVE claimed two medals so far at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Cartagena, Colombia.

Jamaica managed a silver medal in swimming through Alia Atkinson, who was second in the women's 200 metre breaststroke.

Atkinson finished in two minutes, 38.31 seconds behind Mexico's Adriano Marmolejo, who clocked a meet record 2:34.56.

Venezuela's Daniela Victoria was third in 2:39.81.

Jamaica's second silver medal came in the keirin cycling category.

Keirin is an event where riders compete in a sprint after completing a certain number of laps behind a motorcycle pacer.

Ricardo Lynch was the man that brought home the silverware for the Jamaicans in that event, winning both his groups to avoid the repecharge before finishing second in the final.

Oneil Simmonds failed to make it out of the first round after he failed to finish the event.

The results put Jamaica in 11th place in the 17-team field.

At press time, Atkinson was looking for her second medal after she qualified for the 50m butterfly with the second fastest time behind Mexico's Teresa Lopez.

More medals could come from the sport of cycling after Iona Winter made the final of the 400m time trial last night.

Jamaica were also in the running for the bronze medal in women's squash singles after Karen Anderson made it to the semi-finals of the competition.

RESULTS PENDING

That result, however, is yet to be confirmed pending translations from the competition's offices.

In the men's doubles, Jamaica have found themselves in the second round after the team of Christopher Binnie and Steve Smith beat the St. Vincent team of James Beutick and Shane Slater in three sets (15-13, 15-17, 15-9).

Jamaica were also scheduled to play against Colombia in women's basketball last night in a must-win situation after they lost to Mexico (68-87) and Cuba (50-88) in their group.
