Jamaica still in doubt for Caribbean Volleyball Championship
published: Wednesday | July 19, 2006

KINGSTON (CMC):

JAMAICA'S participation in next month's Caribbean Volleyball Championship (CVC) in the Bahamas remains doubtful in spite of a renewed effort by the organisers to get them to compete.

The Jamaica Volleyball Association (JAVA) had declared last month that heavy debts had forced them to cancel plans to send the male and female teams to the tournament. Since that announcement, the tournament was moved from Barbados and new hosts, the Bahamas, have sought to encourage the Jamaicans to revisit their decision to withdraw.

But JAVA president Pat Garel says there has been no change to the financial factors that led them to cancel their participation plans.

"We are awaiting any kind of word to say that there is some kind of assistance for us," Garel told CMC Sport.

"We would do whatever we could to get there but can't out of the money we have. We can't go without some help and we would very much love to go," she added.

JAVA had run into debt after hosting the World Championship qualifiers last year and attracting sponsorship has proven very challenging.
