Broadcast blunders
published: Friday | July 21, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE to record my annoyance with the Broadcast Commission for its ineptitude in patrolling broadcast media and for its inability to enforce well established regulations.

Television stations here continue to exhibit flagrant disrespect for the sensitivities of their audience by broadcasting programmes with content not fit for network TV. The latest incident was on CVM TV on Wednesday (July 19) at midnight, where my ears were ringing after a caller on the Cable Wireless/ Oceanic Digital 'Win Win' programme shouted the Jamaican swear word 'b...-cl...'

Local stations seem unable to responsibly broadcast live and even delayed programmes, as expletives are regularly broadcast on both TVJ and CVM, whether with National Premier League football matches, newscasts and several movies, and yet the Broadcast Commission is like a toothless watchdog, weighed down with too much food and too much sleep.

Media often champion the need to soften libel laws here but do not exert similar effort and passion in following the Broadcast Code. Actions such as the airing of the videotape of the alleged sexual assault on a schoolgirl are unconscionable and distasteful.

I am, etc.,

A.A. WRIGHT

Kingston
