Jamaica open 20/20 campaign tonight
published: Friday | July 21, 2006

IF ONE was to pick the winner of the Stanford 20/20 cricket tournament based on line-ups, Jamaica would be a safe bet.

However, history has shown that names do not play the game, it is performance on the day that matters. Jamaica's cricketers to the inaugural tournament in Antigua are well aware of this and know Bermuda cannot be taken lightly when the sides meet in Antigua tonight at 7:00.

Jamaica boast a team laden with Test players in Wavell Hinds, Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Xavier Marshall, Donovan Pagon, Carlton Baugh Jr., Jerome Taylor and Jermaine Lawson.

Bermuda, on the other hand, have no one in particular to speak of. While the betting man would not wager his all on Bermuda, who are using the tournament as preparation for 2007 Cricket World Cup, the underdogs have hinted that they are not in Antigua just to enjoy the beaches.

Despite their strength, Jamaica have not passed the first round of the regional one-day tournament in three years and have not won that title since 1999.
