Stephenson bags win for Göteborgs
published: Friday | July 21, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

JAMAICAN INTERNATIONAL Khari Stephenson opened his account for Swedish Allsvenskan team Göteborgs Atlet & Idrottssällskap (GAIS) when he scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Gefle IF on Tuesday at the Gamla Ullevi Stadium.

The burly midfielder struck in the 13th minute from about 25 metres away from goal, with a right-footed free-kick which curled away to the left of Gelfe custodian Mattias Hugosson.

The win put the team in eighth place on 12 points, one position ahead of Gefle IF who have the same amount of points but trail on goal difference. Stephenson, who has so far proved to be popular with the fans since moving to GAIS, was substituted in the 79th minute.

VOTED MVP

The 6'3" Stephenson, now 25 and who signed a three-year contract for an undisclosed sum with the club in April, was voted the game's MVP.

Things did not go as smoothly for Reggae Boy Luton Shelton as he saw his team Helsingborg go down 3-1 at home to BK Hacken.

The 21-year-old Shelton, who signed with the club this month, partners with Swedish superstar Henrik Larsson up front. Larsson joined the squad at the end of the World Cup. Helsingborg are in 10th place with 10 points.

Jamaican international Teofore Bennett, who recently signed with club Öster, saw his team go down 2-0 to defending champions Hammarby on Monday. The Swedish Allsvenskan league kicked off about 10 days ago after having been suspended for a month due to the World Cup.
