Witnesses bound over for cop trial
published: Saturday | July 22, 2006

WESTERN BUREAU:

TWELVE WITNESSES were bound over by Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie to testify at the preliminary enquiry in the case of Constable Hugh Campbell, who is charged with the murder of Corporal Grantley Waite, in November 2005.

The witnesses are to return to the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on October 26 and 27 when the enquiry is expected to begin.

The clerk of the courts told the court that the prosecution was experiencing difficulties which were hindering its ability to proceed. Constable Campbell, who is attached to the Mount Salem Police Station, had his $1 million bail extended.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Kent Pantry, ruled earlier this year that the 35-year-old constable must be charged with the murder of the corporal who died after he was allegedly beaten by the constable on November 15 when he went to the Mt. Salem Police Station. The corporal succumbed to the injuries he received, days later.
