LETTER OF THE DAY - After the fiasco time for action
published: Saturday | July 22, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM pleased that the Contractor General has finally produced a report on the White House fiasco that is forthright, but more importantly, goes on further to suggest that we cannot as a nation continue to accept corruption in high places.

The Prime Minister has been accused of taking the wheels of the same old bus. While this is not necessarily true, she now has an opportunity to act in a decisive manner. In a recent speech, she accused her opponents of using flowery language and no action. She promised to use 90 per cent of her time implementing and 10 per cent talking. The Minister of Information has made a statement suggesting that the Cabinet has accepted the report. We will accept this as the 10per cent talking promised by the Prime Minister. Now we are ready for the 90 per cent.

How does the Government plan to make it known that it is not business as usual and the time has come to account to the people of Jamaica? What we know is that nepotism, corruption, cronyism, concealment and fraud are the order of the day and are practised by those entrusted to ensure the welfare of all Jamaicans. The arrogance exhibited by those involved is unacceptable. They have taken the position that this too will die a natural death. What should be taking place is a rush on attorneys. Instead, we are told that the perpetrators do not wish to discuss the matter.

THE PROMISES

Promises of the Prime Minister to rid the nation of corruption must be put under a microscope. Physician heal thyself. Really? How can those steeped in corrupt practices be made accountable? Certainly, we do not expect to see any change of attitude if all we say to those who have breached the public trust is 'Cabinet has accepted the findings ? and a further statement on the matter is to follow.'

Madam Prime Minister, you now have evidence in your hand, you now have concrete proof that public funds were spent in contravention of the principles and regulations set out by your government. You are not required to use flowery words. Further I sayeth not.

I am etc.,
