Sinclair sets new record
published: Saturday | July 22, 2006

KENIA SINCLAIR was in record-breaking form at yesterday's Vardin-oyiannia athletics meeting in Crete, Rethymnon, Greece.

Despite her second-place finish, Sinclair broke the 1:58 seconds barrier for the first time by running 1:57.88 to finish second behind Maria Mutola of Mozambique (1:57.36).

The Jamaican bettered her previous best of 1:58.16 which had provided her with the Commonwealth Games silver medal in March.

In other events, Usain Bolt, Dwight Thomas, Maurice Wignall and Dean Griffiths also entered the medal podium.

Bolt, the World Junior 200m record holder finished second in the half-lap event in 20.29 seconds, beaten by American Junior Kelly Willie (20.20).

Christopher Williams (20.49) and Commonwealth Games champion Omar Brown (20.63) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Wignall, a finalist at the 2004 Olympics, was third in the men's 110m hurdles, crossing the line in 13.26 behind the American pair of Dominique Arnold (13.01) and Aries Merritt (13.17).

The 49.14 run by Griffiths was only good enough for second in the men's 400m hurdles. Michael Tinsley of United States (U.S.) won the event in 49.10 seconds.

Commonwealth Games 100m champion Sheri-Ann Brooks finished fourth and fifth in the 200m and 100m respectively.

Brooks ran 23.35 in the 200m won by Rochelle Boone-Smith of the U.S. (22.50) and 11.35 in the 100m won by American Torri Edwards, whose 10.86 was boosted by a 2.20mps wind speed.

Shereefa Lloyd ran a season best 23.30 for third in the 'B' event.

Meanwhile, Tyson Gay of the U.S. won the men's 100m in a personal best 9.88 seconds, the fifth fastest time this season.
