Another censure bid today
published: Tuesday | July 25, 2006

A censure motion calling for the resignation of Minister of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce Phillip Paulwell, who has been accused of misleading Parliament and gross dereliction of duty, is to be debated in the House of Representatives today.

Audley Shaw, the Opposition Spokesman on Finance, who brought the motion to Parliament, said Minister Paulwell misled the House in relation to a statement on the cement crisis when he said that substandard cement was confined to a batch of 500 tonnes produced between February 23 and 25 this year.

In an earlier interview with The Gleaner, Mr. Shaw said the Opposition intended to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Commerce Minister misled Parliament.

"We also intend to demonstrate that there has been rampant neglect and gross dereliction of his duties which have resulted in untold losses in every sector of the society," he said.

A shortage of cement followed the discovery of poor quality product on the market, which led to a widespread shutdown of the sector and massive layoffs.
