A toll boycott rally is scheduled for next Monday as the Portmore Citizens' Advisory Council (PCAC) intensifies its protest against the controversial highway toll.
Organised by the umbrella community group, the planned rally is part of the PCAC's efforts to press for more negotiations with the Government regarding the current cost to use the newly-opened toll road. A lack of response on the part of Government could result in heightened protest actions.
The Reverend Barrington Soares, former chair of the PCAC, said the boycott would continue until the Government begins dialogue again with a view to lower the toll.
"We will continue this use of the alternative. It means that the boycott can become three months or six months," Mr. Soares said.
According to PCAC chairperson Yvonne McCormack, the event to be held at the Lions Civic Centre will see several leaders in the society who will highlight the impact of a $60 toll on
commuters from the community. While refusing to give names, she dismissed claims that the matter was political.
"The Jamaica Labour Party and or the PNP (People's National Party) will play no role in any meeting or forum that the PCAC is having," she stressed, adding that they are not a political group.
