The Organised Crime Investigation Division has launched a new task force for Kingston and St. Andrew to buttress the work of Operation Kingfish.
The new initiative, to be called the Major Investigative Task Force, was announced by Assistant Commissioner of Police Leslie Green during the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica and Cable and Wireless Job Creation Awards ceremony at the Terra Nova Hotel, New Kingston, yesterday.
ACP Green, in charge of serious and organised crime, said the task force was launched last Friday. He said that while Operation Kingfish was targeting the major players in crime, their supporting casts were still thriving and would have to be tackled through the new task force.
"This (team) is a combination of detectives and senior crime officers working together for any murder and shooting that occurs in Kingston and St. Andrew," he said.
ACP Green added that the force would be focusing on improving the skills of its members in the area of investigation. He also revealed that the team would focus on forensic science and securing evidence, which would lead to a better conviction rate. ACP Green, however, bemoaned the lack of resources in the force and said a shortage of funds was hampering the force while it works towards modernisation.
"The resources with the Jamaica Constabulary Force are far from sufficient for a modern police force and we do need to strive to increase those daily," he said.
