WESTERN BUREAU:
PACED BY another inspired performance by lanky national Under-16 goal shooter Danielle Ellis, Juvenile crowned themselves champions of the 2006 JPS/St. James Intermediate Netball League at the weekend when they defeated Blazers 'B' 30-26 in the championship game at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts.
"We came into the game very confident and we knew it would be hard to beat us if we played well," said the 6' 1" Ellis. "After eliminating our senior team in the semi-finals we were determined not to lose."
As was expected, the game was a thriller as both Blazers 'B' and Juvenile gave possibly their best performances of the season.
In the first quarter, Blazers 'B' had the better of the exchanges as Daisy-Ann Jackson, who got 17 goals in the game, had the Juvenile defence under pressure with her precise shooting. The quarter ended with Blazer having a 7-6 advantage.
Juvenile outscore Tornado
Juvenile gradually began to take charge in the second quarter as they outscored Tornado 9-5 with Ellis, who scored all 30 goals for them, gradually taking charge. After taking a 15-12 halftime lead, Juvenile ran into more resistance in the third quarter as Blazers 'B' won it 10-5 to establish a slim 22-20 lead going into the final quarter.
However, in the final stanza, Juvenile went into overdrive as they launched an all-out assault on their opponent to win the quarter 9-5, which gave them their overall 30-26 margin of victory.
The winning Juvenile team reads: Danielle Ellis (GS), Odette Wollery (GA), Denise Brown (WA), Georgia Reid (C), Verine Williams (WD), Alecia Anderson (GD) and Jody-Ann Grant (GK).
Juvenile and Blazers 'B' have both qualified to play in the JPSCo/St. James Senior Netball League season by virtue of making the Intermediate League final.
