Jackfruit: Hate it or love it!
published: Thursday | July 27, 2006

Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

The jackfruit was never the most attractive-looking fruit ever created. But what sets it apart is the unmisktable and, for some, unbearable smell!

Now we've no idea (and trust me, we've tried to find out), why the jackfruit is so pungent! So imagine the dismay of co-workers when we brought a 20-pound jackfruit to the office!

Already reeking, when we cracked it open, the smell rose like the cost of living. More than a few eyebrows (and noses) went up. Waiting to be crucified for our transgression, it turns out that not everybody hates the enigmatic fruit. Despite the smell of the jackfruit, people still love it anyway.

"It's a great smell. The real country smell," says one fellow. While we're patriotic and everything, that doesn't help!

"How can anybody eat it? The smell is so terrible," responded a female this time. More than a few persons agreed with this sentiment as we tried subdividing the hefty fruit. With jackfruit totally circulating through the air-conditioning system, others still professed their adoration.

"I just love the smell of it," chirped an enthusiastic member. "It has such a sweet smell." Sweet? If you say so old chap! Even after the jackfruit was surgically divided for persons to carry home, it still left its "impression" on at least one person who arrived late on the scene!

"Then a dat mi was smelling, like touch pork!"
