THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am scared. There is no other way to say it and I feel so helpless as there is no one to turn to at this time. I live in West Central St. Andrew and there has been a recent upsurge of violence in the community, especially in the Mall Road area. So far one person has been shot and killed while another was shot in the mouth. The police have been trying to help but have not been doing enough to solve the problem.
Recently, they found a high-powered weapon and a bulletproof vest in a yard on Mall Road. On Thursday last week, they again found another high-powered weapon (submachine gun) and the man with the gun was shot and killed. Many people went on the road to demonstrate but the truth is most were secretly relieved; the demonstration only lasted for about three hours that day. Individuals of high social ranking and with lots of financial resources bring guns into the community yet no one cares.
We need a change in thinking if Jamaica is to ever regain its soul. When the Prime Minister said that she would focus on human rights, someone needed to tell her that the lack of opportunities is a violation of human rights. When the Prime Minister talks about developing Jamaica one community at a time, I wish someone would remind her that it includes West Central St. Andrew - a constituency, not very far removed in geographical distance or social complexion from her own.
I am, etc.,
