Walters strikes bronze - Locals continue to struggle at CAC Games
published: Thursday | July 27, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

Nicholas Walters on Tuesday night grabbed another bronze medal for Jamaica and the country's only boxing medal at the XX Central American and Caribbean Games currently being held in Cartagena, Colombia.

Walters, who had been assured of at least a bronze medal after making it to the semi-finals, was eventually outdone by the Dominican Republic's Ronald De La Rosa in a tightly contested match, which ended with a 12-10 scoreline.

Jamaica's medal tally after Walters' feat now stands at 11, with six gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

De La Rosa will now face Puerto Rico's Carlos Velazquez for the gold medal, while Walters will share his bronze with Cuba's Yuriorki Gamboa.

Gamboa lost to Velazquez 7-10 in another closely contested semi-final.

On the track, Jamaica are yet to win a medal as Clora Williams finished fourth in the 400 metres final, while Toni-Ann Doyley finished in the same position in the Women's 100 metres hurdles.

Doyley finished in 13.10 seconds behind Cuba's Anay Tejada (12.88) and Haiti's Nadine Fostin. Jamaica's Andrea Bliss was fifth in 13.42 seconds.

In the 400 metres final, Cuba's Yehnar Lopez (45.28), Grenada's Alleyne Francique (45.44) and the Dominican Republic's Arlisendy Pequero were good enough to relegate Jamaica's Ricardo Chambers to a disappointing fourth in 45.73 seconds.

Earlier, Jason Saunders and Wainard Talbert finished 13th and 14th respectively in the road race event.

Saunders finished in 33 minutes 47.94 seconds, just ahead of Talbert in 34:65.94.

In Tuesday night's javelin final, Miekael Downer and Aundrae Clarke finished in 8th and 9th positions respectively.

At press time last night, the women's long jump was in progress and Jovanee Jarrett was in sixth place, while the final of both the men's and women's 100 metres races were set to take place later.
