'Super Ex' light, but fun!
published: Friday | July 28, 2006

G-Girl (Uma Thurman) takes her boyfriend, Matt (Luke Wilson), for an unscheduled flight high above New York City. - Contributed

My Super Ex-Girlfriend is a fun, silly movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, as it should not. The film is directed by Ivan Reitman (Six Days Seven Nights and Kindergarten Cop) and scripted by Don Payne.

Though by no-means brilliant, My Super Ex-Girlfriend occasionally brightens from true wit, but generally labours under a good sense of humour that is willing to go beyond the super-hero (or in this case superheroine) veneer and look at how they interact with the real world. It toys with the ideas that superhero nerds ask themselves when asking deep philosophical questions, such as why Superman and Wonderwoman always come back together (after everybody else).

G-Girl enamoured

So, Uma Thurman plays a Superhero G-Girl, who is clearly in large part cut from the same cloth as Superman, but with more estrogen mixed into the formula. By day, she is Jenny Johnson, a brown-haired assistant curator (who, of course, wears glasses) and then she converts into a blonde-haired fashionista diva who paints her nails and fights crime.

G-Girl becomes enamoured by Matt Saunders, an average Joe (who is even a little overweight) played by Luke Wilson. Alas, along with being a superhero, G-Girl is also a neurotic, needy, jealous woman and she also does not need her infrared vision to see that Matt is in love with his blonde co-worker, Hannah Lewis (Ana Faris). So finally Matt dumps G-Girl. Unfortunately, he is about to realise that a superhero ex-girlfriend is able to do all the things regular ex-girlfriends are only able to dream about.

Well-needed release

My Super Ex-Girlfriend is a cute tongue-in-cheek take on the Superhero genre. It plays with the ideas that all superheroes are hot, and that hair colour and glasses can really be used as disguises.

The role gives Thurman some well-needed release from her last blood-soaked outing in her quest to 'kill bill', and she is clearly enjoying herself. Wilson is also in his comfort zone, as nothing in particular distinguishes this role from most of the others that he has played.

As such, if one is in the mood to laugh at a superhero or two, My Super Ex-Girlfriend provides enough laughter. It's silly and enjoyable, especially if you don't take it too seriously. It's so light, it floats, but it's a fair enough ride.
