Audrey Marks, the chief executive officer of the bill payment agency, Paymaster, has defended her company's decision to implement a service charge on customers.
She emphasised that the move will not result in a profit for Paymaster as the $30 per transaction fee reflects the minimum required for cost recovery.
"The fact of the matter is that Paymaster Jamaica has subsidised its customers from inception, because, as provider of a novel and at the time unique service, we thought it was critical to first win the confidence of the market as a reliable and efficient payment agency," said Ms. Marks. "But as you know, as a private company, we could not continue this indefinitely. Moreover, the cost base with which we began operation nine years ago is not the same today."
The Paymaster chief executive officer was responding to questions posed by members of the public as part of The Gleaner's new series, 'You Ask The Questions', which allows members of the public to ask questions of private and public sector officials.
