Let us face reality

THE EDITOR, Sir:
The onslaught of HIV/AIDS in the region is nothing to scoff at, which is why I find the sentiments of Mr. Errol G. Lawrence about the distribution of condoms in prison baffling.
The distribution of condoms, whether in prisons or elsewhere, is no more encouraging sex or buggery among inmates than is the wearing of helmets on motorcycles an invitation to ride recklessly. It is a simple matter of prevention being better than cure. The reality is HIV/AIDS is an issue not only in our penal system but in our society at large. Inmates should be given the same opportunity to protect themselves from infection, if not for their own health, for the health of the wider society. Many of these inmates will at some point be paroled or released having served their time, and far worse than returning a hardened criminal, they could very well put the partners and communities to which they return at risk for infection.
I believe if done discreetly, the issuing of condoms in prison will, if not stop, help to slow the spread of the disease among the prisons. Let us face reality and act responsibly as a people.
