A blast awaits this weekend
published: Friday | July 28, 2006

Chester Francis-Jackson, Contributor

From left: Ruth Hussey, Michelle Hussey, Christelle Harris, Jennifer Lim, Donna Reynolds, Valerie Marzouca. local organiser of the Chain of Hope charity event, Anna Ryan and Hyacinth Davidson at a New Year's Eve party held at the Terra Nova Hotel, last year.

And so, sweet-things, last week this time it was all about Montego Bay. Well, this coming weekend it's the North Coast as Jamaica will be in the throes of its Independence and Emancipation Day celebrations, and pumpkins, for the young and the beautiful, the bold and party-hearty, it's all about escaping the city of Kingston and heading for the vibes of the North Coast!

Well, pumpkins, if y'all haven't yet confirmed your reservations, then y'all could be in a pickle, and then some, as indeed, from Negril to Morant Point, the better resorts have been swamped with bookings, and already some are turning away would-be guests as there is no more rooms to be had.

Now, with Ocho Rios and its environs being the preferred destination, with the return of Reggae Sunspash, coupled with the annual Dover Race Meet, and the Seville Cultural Yard; honeys, y'all know we are talking one weekend chock-full of fab activities here!

Exciting events

Well, add to this milieu of exciting things to do the Emancipation Day extravaganza, scheduled for the fabulous Breezes Runaway Bay, as a kind of precursor to its closing its shutters to effect a multimillion-dollar renovation project, to be executed during the summer and completed in time for reopening for the winter tourist season.

Daahlings, we are talking the complete transformation of this already fab resort, but more anon, as to herald the resort's renovation plans the management and staff have decided on throwing one helluva Emancipation Day shindig that promises to eclipse all in scope, detail, and historical perspective, as they serve up a tableau of a cultural and historical feast to celebrate the occasion, and promising to take no social prisoners.

Dovecakes, it promises to be all that, so y'all know, this is where this scribe will see in Emancipation Day!

And then, my daahlings, it seems that the island's leading citizenry, having just got back from their annual Continental European sojourn, will barely have time to catch their breath before it's back to the packing of their designer travelling bags for a return trip to London, come November 1, when the internationally distinguished and much celebrated Sir Magdi Yacoub, and his London-based Charity - The Chain of Hope - that marvellous charity organisation that travels the world giving hope and life to many of the world's poorer children, will hold their charity ball. Without the intervention of The Chain of Hope, they would have had their precious lives terminated early due to illnesses, particularly those who suffer from cardiac ailments, as this is Sir Magdi's area of medical renown.

My daahlings, the affair will be hosted at the fabulous Dorchester Hotel, over there on Park Lane, in the middle of fabulous London, and honeys, it promises to be all that, and then some!

Now, y'all know that there's nothing better than contributing to the welfare and well-being of the needy and the indisposed. And if in doing so one is afforded a jolly good time in the process - then what better way to be our brothers' keepers?

My dears, it's like that and then some, and so little wonder here that indeed, Sir Magdi's Chain of Hope Autumn Charity Ball at the Dorchester on November 1 is one of the season's hottest events. With the charity serving the needy in several developed and developing countries, wonder here that the world's well-to-do and the fab are all queuing to attend this prestigious affair.

Already, the chain's local chair here, the fabulous Valerie Marzouca, is having a juice of a time trying to address the many requests here for tickets. As is to be expected with an affair of this here nature, tickets are at a premium - meaning red-hot, and honeys, are they being gobbled up!

International show-stopper

Pumpkins, more anon, as indeed, this one promises to be an international show-stopper.

And speaking of show-stoppers: my dears, reservations are pouring in like everybody's business over there at the tres chic and oh so fabulous Royal Plantation Hotel and Spa, Ocho Rios, for this here Sunday's much celebrated and last Sunday monthly champagne brunch!

Luvs, the brainchild of the hotel's GM Peter Fraser, the affair is a calendar event for the lover of the fab-life and those with a zest for the epicurean delights that this bastion of good living turns out.

My dears, talk about a hot number! Well, this monthly affair is the North Coast's premier hot-number, that not only sees the fab and the glamorous and the artsy coming out of their fab North Coast villas to bask in others' companionship, but also see the well-heeled of Kingston and St. Andrew, as well as from Montego Bay and Mandeville, making the monthly trek to indulge well-honed taste buds, as well as the august company usually in attendance.

Spectacular affair

And my dears, little wonder here, as with one fabulous feast on offer, it is indeed a gourmet's delight, not to mention the virtual social feast in the making, as it's usually the place to be seen and be, for a long and lazy brunch, come the end of each month. And dears, this month end promises to be no less a spectacular affair, as Peter Fraser and his staff promise all that and then some, topped by the revered service the hotel is known for! Honeys, y'all know it's the place to be this here Sunday, as it is the preferred haunt of the card-carrying members of fab-society, and those to the manner born, so let the champagne flow!

Then, speaking of champagne flowing: Don't know the preferred brand yet, but come next Tuesday, legal luminary and onetime JLP political powerhouse, Harold Brady, will be celebrating his birthday, and in the fine style for which he is known.

Now, the buzz is friends of the legal powerhouse will be throwing him a little shindig in his honour, so wait for it. Now, the invites are already out, and so if you have not yet received yours, get with the programme as it simply means you are not expected.

Anyways, it promises to be a swell affair for those gusting, so honeys, count this here scribe as being one of those not only RSVP, but also to be in attendance!

Then now, you know, someone should tell these celebrants, that here in Jamaica, "we nuh frighten"!

Luvs, heard that America's Next Top Model Eva was in town recently, but girlfriend and entourage had and gave so much attitude, it was quite a turn-off for those who recognised her, as the miss was doing and giving 'Star' attitude in such a major way, she found it nigh to impossible to even speak to the staff at the resort she stayed.

Now, picture her against the fabulous Kate Moss, not an aspirant here, but a model at the top of her game, who not only found time to speak to all those who would chat with her, but also found time to party up a riot at the Roof Club, over there in Port Antonio, on her last visit, without any of that 'do you know who I am' stuff!

And so it is yes, someone should tell her and her handlers, "we nuh frighten" - the word and sentiment of the waitstaff, of the resort they stayed.
