Stanford twenty/20: Jamaica, Guyana set for big clash
published: Friday | July 28, 2006

Gayle

Jamaica's hunt for the Stanford 20/20 title, worth US$1 million (approx. J$66m) continues tonight when they face Guyana in the third quarter-final match at the Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua.

A quarter-final win for Jamaica tonight will push them two steps away from pocketing one of the biggest cash prizes in cricket.

In today's opening quarter-final game, Trinidad & Tobago take on Barbados at 2:00 p.m. (Ja time).

A win for Jamaica will set up a semi-final clash with surprise team Nevis, who destroyed Antigua in Wednesday's quarter-final.

The Jamaicans, led by pacer Jerome Taylor's five for 10 and Chris Gayle's unbeaten 40 off 22 deliveries, defeated Bermuda by nine wickets last Friday.

However, come tonight the Jamai-cans are facing much stronger opposition and a closer match, should be expected.

Marlon Samuels, who scored an unbeaten 25 off just 12 balls in Jamaica's lone match to date, and Xavier Marshall, who made a first ball duck, along with Gayle, are the only Jamaicans who batted.

Captain Wavell Hinds, Carlton Baugh Jr., Shawn Findlay, Donovan Pagon, Lorenzo Ingram are all very good batsmen.

The bowling will once again be spearheaded by Taylor, and Odean Brown, who picked up two wickets in two deliveries against Bermuda, along with Jermaine Lawson, Samuels and Gayle.

West Indies vice-captain Ramna-resh Sarwan could be the danger man on the Guyana team for the Junior Bennett-coached Jamai-cans who have had very poor regional one-day tournaments over the past three seasons.

Lennox Cush, Narsingh Deonarine, Travis Dowlin, Neil McGarrell, and Mahendra Nagamootoo should also feature strongly in the Guyana team.
