Simmons' ton gives Windies 'A' control
published: Friday | July 28, 2006

LEICESTERSHIRE (CMC):

Lendl Simmons hit an even century and Runako Morton fell just short of another, as West Indies "A" dominated Leicestershire's bowling attack on the second day of their three-day game at Grace Road yesterday.

While Simmons was dismissed on reaching his landmark, Morton fell for 86, but the duo's effort was good enough to push West Indies "A" to 349 all out, a lead of 144 runs.

At the close, Leicestershire batting a second time were one without loss.

Resuming at their overnight 58 without loss, West Indies "A" suffered an early setback when left-handed opener Devon Smith was prised out by medium pacer Ryan Cummins for 28.

Dominated attack

Simmons was then joined by Morton and together they dominated the Leicestershire attack, adding 159 for the second wicket.

The right-handed Simmons, who showed good form in this year's Carib Beer Series, hit 13 fours and one six in his knock that required 201 balls and spanned just over five hours.

Morton, who hit 105 in the opening win against Durham last weekend, hammered eight fours and two sixes, facing 176 balls in 228 minutes batting.

The duo were dismissed within four runs of each other to leave the visitors at 229 for three, and when Ryan Hinds fell without scoring, the Windies had lost three wickets for the addition of just four runs.

Revived innings

Captain Sylvester Joseph and the attacking Dwayne Smith then came together to add 53 for the fifth wicket, adding momentum to the middle order and reviving the flagging innings.

While Joseph laboured 66 minutes over 19, Smith cracked a cavalier 36 from 37 balls with four fours and two sixes.

Again, when both fell within close proximity of each other, the innings stuttered and only Omari Banks with 23, showed any enterprise thereafter.

Cummins finished with four for 46 while left-arm orthodox slow bowler Claude Henderson claimed four for 138.
