Mandeville, Manchester:

One person died and another was admitted to the Mandeville Hospital following a traffic accident on the Porus main road on Wednesday.

According to the Porus police, a Toyota Corona motor car travelling towards Clarendon and being driven by 22-year-old Mark Powell of Albert Town, Trelawny, got out of control after he applied the brakes to avoid hitting a Volkswagen motor car going in the opposite direction.

The Volkswagen, a late 1970s model, was being driven by Lascelles Lewis of Porus. The female passenger in the vehicle died on the spot. Mr. Powell told the police that he observed the Volkswagen drifting into his lane and applied his brakes to avoid hitting it. However, instead of stopping, the Toyota he was driving picked up a skid and slammed into the Volkswagen.

Lewis was unable to give a statement as he was rushed to hospital while the body of the female was taken to Lyn's Funeral Home.

The police told The Gleaner that this was the fourth serious accident on the Porus main road over a one- month period. They are warning that this is a very dangerous stretch of road, especially when wet.
