NAJ's action strengthened
published: Wednesday | August 2, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Your editorial "NAJ should seek goal through conciliation" of July 31 has on the surface sought to analyse both sides of the argument for the Government's ability to afford the nurses' salary requests.

However, placed against the backdrop of the bill before Parliament to increase salaries of MPs, coupled with the administration's cavalier approach to addressing current wage disputes within the public sector, the argument in favour of the NAJ's action is strengthened. Any public manifestation of dissent may be deemed at this time emotional, or mere political expediency depending on which side of the fence the objection to the dissension stems.

It is grossly unfair for the administration to expect sacrifice from public sector employees when they have no intention of themselves holding strain. Their contemptuous approach only invites suspicion, resentment and defiance.

I am, etc.,
