It's that time of year again when we present the beauties. The Gleaner, in the upcoming weeks will run profiles of all the contestants in the 2006 Miss Jamaica World pageant ahead of the coronation on August 19. 15 girls are vying for the prestigious title and the opportunity to follow in Terri-Karelle Griffiths' footsteps. Today we present ...

Name: Renee Barrett

Age: 18

Occupation: Student at Shortwood Teachers' College

Vital Statistics: 36/28/38

Height: 5 feet 6 inches

Weight: 120 lbs

How do you feel about Jamaica's performance in pageants over the years?

I've always been proud of Jamaica 'cause to the amount of countries that enter, Jamaica always seems to do well.

Do you think beauty pageants are still relevant and why?

I think they are because I think too many young women are not confident in themselves and I think beauty pageants bring out that confidence in them. So yes, I think its very relevant. Well not just beauty pageants but pageants that help to bring out the confidence in young women.

What in your opinion is your best quality?

My personality, its flexible beyond measure. I can fit into any and every situation and for that reason I think its what makes me who I am. But because I'm so flexible I hardly bend under pressure.

How does this competition fit into your plans for the future?

Well I've always wanted to be a child advocate and I think this competition is a window to do what I've always wanted to do. I think people really listen to not just contestants but finalists. Being in this competition tells me I'm going to be seen and heard and that will help me to do what I've always wanted to do, seeing that I'm going to pursue my career in teaching.

Which of the mini-competitions do you stand the best chance of winning?

Talent, I do poetry, I do a little writing but I think I can bring words that have already been written across better.

Name three must -haves.

I must always have my mom around, my mom is my backbone. I must always have her around. I must have a car and I must have a bible.

Why should you win the title of Miss Jamaica world 2006?

I think for a change, with me its not about long hair, to me its different with me and I think I can really reach out to young girls who have been through hardships and are going through hardships, as well as children who need help I think I can really reach out to them and this title is a way to do what I've always wanted to do.
