Since 1984, Kingston Wharves Limited (KWL) has sponsored a cricket camp coordinated by the Jamaica Cricket Association.
The camp has been a training ground for many of the members of Jamaica's Under-15 cricket team, who also go on to become members of the senior team, including such players as Courtney Walsh and Chris Gayle.
This year, KWL has provided over $2 million in sponsorship to the camp for which 60 young men were selected from a total of 270, from parishes across the island. The 60 participants are now residing at the camp site at the G.C. Foster College. They will remain there until August 9, when there will be a set of competitive matches and a closing ceremony.
At a rap session with the campers on August 3, chairman and CEO of Kingston Wharves Limited, Grantley Stephenson, explained to campers that the company invested in this venture because of their interest in the survival of cricket and the development of young people. He encouraged the youngsters to apply discipline and the right attitude to playing cricket in order to be successful.
The camp was designed to enable the youngsters to have the confidence required to compete at the national level. It is expected that they will also be able to relate to and live with each other. The training programme curriculum also includes lessons in grooming and etiquette as well as counselling on drug and alcohol abuse.
