Murders stay down

FOR the seventh time this year, murders in Jamaica have fallen below the number for the same period in 2005. This information was released yesterday by the statistical department of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

According to the figures, 96 persons were murdered in July. That is 49 less than the number of homicides recorded in July 2005.

The only month which saw an increase in murders over last year was April. JCF figures show that 129 persons were killed in April 2006, one more than the previous year.

To date, 756 persons have been murdered this year in Jamaica, 254 less than at the end of July 2005.

A record 1,671 murders were recorded in Jamaica in 2005.
