Board changes at Carreras, LoJ
published: Thursday | August 10, 2006

Former group financial officer of Carreras, Marlene Sutherland, who remained on the company's board after retirement, has resigned as a director, the company informed the Jamaica Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

Sutherland, who has sat on Carreras' board since October 1989, was the company's group finance director and corporate secretary prior to her retirement in 2004 after some 18 years with the company.

Her resignation became effective July 31, 2006.

Two months ago, the highly respected executive, who is studying abroad, was appointed to the board of Lascelles deMercado.

It was a reunion, of sorts, with her former boss, Richard Ashenheim, chairman of Lascelles, who, prior to his retirement as chairman of Carreras last year, sat on the former cigarette manufacturer's board for some 44 years.

At the time of her appointment to Lascelles' board, managing director William McConnell described Sutherland as a "very, very talented person" with extensive experience.

There was also some board movements at insurance giant Life of Jamaica (LoJ).

Resignation

J. Arthur Bethell, chairman of LoJ's parent company, Sagicor Financial Corporation, resigned as chairman of the insurance company, effective July 20, and was replaced by fellow Barbadian Dodridge Miller.

Mr. Miller is the president and CEO of the Sagicor Group.

President and chief executive offiver of LoJ, Richard Byles, said there would be no significant changes with the resignation of Bethell, who will remain as the chairman of the Sagicor Financial Group.

"It's a policy decision from the top - it does not mark any significant event for Arthur," said Byles. He added that the move "will put Dodridge Miller closer to the operations of the various country units in the region. As chairman he will be able to relate more to, rather than as a director."
