Constable caught delivering ganja
published: Thursday | August 10, 2006

WESTERN BUREAU:

A district constable attached to the St. James Police Division is now in custody after he was caught on Tuesday delivering marijuana to a prisoner being housed in a cell at the Freeport Police Station.

Three prisoners have since been charged with possession of and dealing in ganja and crack cocaine, following a search of the cell.

Investigations are currently under way after which case files will be turned over to Commissioner of Police Lucius Thomas.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Keith 'Trinity' Gardener confirmed the incident, but referred the matter to Superintendent-in-Charge of St. James, Warren Clarke. However, when contacted, Supt. Clarke referred The Gleaner to the communications arm of the police force.

Ongoing process

"This is part of the ongoing process of trying to ensure that the force maintains its integrity, and points to the good work being done under difficult and challenging circumstances by the Professional Standards Branch," said Karl Angell, director of communications.

"No direct comment will be made about the particular incident as the matter is being investigated and, depending on the evidence garnered, a file will be presented to the Commissioner of Police and he will review the file and make a determination regarding what action or actions will be taken, including the possibility of sending the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further action."
