Hayes crisis

The Editor, Sir:
I would like the Jamaican Government to be aware of a crisis that is developing in the communities of Hayes that are in close proximity to the JAMALCO plant. I was living in Cornpiece District of Hayes and can remember seeing the leaves of trees, the roofs of all the houses and our verandahs covered in alumina dust. The alumina dust pollution from that plant is so severe, it is affecting the health of the people living in the area.
What I would like the Govern-ment to do is to investigate this situation and to put in place measures to eliminate the pollution of the communities by the JAMALCO plant. They can install devices such as bag houses or electrostatic precipitators to reduce or eliminate the amount of alumina dust polluting the communities. If not, then the people of that community will continue to breathe and eat alumina. Are the lives of the people less important than money?
I am, etc.,
