Bahia says sorry to family of workers
published: Thursday | August 10, 2006

Hojapi Limited, developers of the Bahia Principe Hotel at Pear Tree Bottom in Runaway Bay, St. Ann, has expressed its deep regret to the relatives of injured workers and the family of Lynward Mitchell, who died in an accident at the construction site last Wednesday.

Mr. Mitchell, a 40-year-old Spanish Town mason, died a day after a section of the Bahia Principe Hotel collapsed while workmen were pouring cement. Fifteen other workers were injured.

Investigation under way

Investigation into the incident is now under way and Hojapi Limited said that it will stick to guidelines and instructions agreed on by the developers and the Government.

"With regard to the investigation, internal and independent parties will be conducting work and subsequently, in conjunction with the assigned regulatory bodies, will be doing inspections prior to the resumption of construction," the company said in a release.

In another incident on May 2 this year, at least three other workers were injured when the foundation of a section of the hotel gave way while concrete was being poured.

The Bahia Principe Hotel is part of the Pinero Group of Spain, which is expected to build three hotels over three years with a total investment of $9.8 billion.
