The race for vice-presidential positions in the People's National Party (PNP) is heating up with another contender offering himself for the post.
Member of Parliament for Eastern St. Thomas and chairman of the party's Region Two, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, will be attempting to secure a senior position at the party's annual conference scheduled for the third week in September.
Incumbents Dr. Paul Robertson and Dr. Peter Phillips are expected to run in the race while new aspirants PNP Region Three chairman, Derrick Kellier; Junior Industry and Commerce Minister, Kern Spencer, and Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation Councillor Angella Brown-Burke are the other contestants.
Two vacancies
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller's promotion to president of the party and the recent resignation of Dr. Karl Blythe have created two vacancies for vice-presidents.
With general elections constitutionally due in 2007, many pundits are surmising that the Portia Simpson Miller-led administration may announce national elections before year-end.
The Jamaica Labour Party recently completed a five-day road tour of sections of the country to shore-up support for the party and to declare its readiness for an election.
